Serie A: The Battle for Champions League Qualification

Serie A: The Battle for Champions League

In a league with its fair share of last-day title deciders, Serie A has still plenty to say with 14 league matches left on the calendar. Even though Inter Milan‘s victory over cousins AC Milan last week may have strongly nudged this season’s Scudetto towards the Nerazzurri, Juventus could still catch Internazionale and at a push the Rossoneri still have an outside shot and a glimmer of hope. With both sides having relatively old squads however, I just can’t see them picking up enough points to topple Mourinho’s men.

What’s for certain is that Juve, Inter and Milan have all but assured their UEFA Champions League qualification for next season; the fourth spot however, is still very much up for grabs.  The usual suspects Roma and Fiorentina are in the thick of it but Genoa (yes, Genoa!!) have also given themselves a decent chance to play European football next season.

Gian Piero GasperiniWho would have thought that Gian Piero Gasperini‘s boys would be in this position when the season started? For the Rossoblu achieving UCL football would be a massive achievement and I’m sure everyone at the club is aware of that. While it may be a little too soon to scream “victory” (remember what happened to Chievo?) Genoa have got a good manager which should be able to keep the pressure off his players, and I’m fairly confident Gasperini’s achievements at the club will see him move onto bigger and better things in the near future.

Presently at the moment, Roma would have to be the favourites to secure the fourth spot.  Despite their Champions League commitments this season (which will put a strain on their side) They’ve got the talent and experience to continue their push.  Fiorentina were eliminated in the group stages this season and they will be eager to qualify again and prove themselves on the European stage.  Napoli seem to have dropped off a bit lately and they may be too far behind to catch up again now.

I’m going to end with a few football betting picks ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.  I think Inter Milan and Juventus will both pick up away wins (respectively vs. Bologna and Palermo) on Saturday, while on Sunday Lazio should put their poor run of form behind them and take all three points from their visit to Lecce

That’s it from me this week, I’ll be back next week though with a Champions League preview where I will be offering my football betting advice once again.
