Serie A Matchday 7 – Week-End Review + GOALS of the Week (2008-09)

Week-End Reviews

For a week-end in which huge football clashes abounded, the biggest entertainment surely came from the fields of Serie A. One field in particular, although it most certainly did not please the (Giallorossi) home fans. Aside from Roma, another team to lose big (although not quite as big) was Juventus, beaten 2-1 at Stadio San Paolo in Napoli.

Starting with the Saturday games, Napoli struck yet another blow to the fast-sinking Juventus ship. The Azzurri overcame a second half-deficit at Stadio San Paolo, obtaining three points through the goals of Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi. Amauri Carvalho de Oliveira had opened the score for the Bianconeri.

Earlier that day, Fiorentina had disposed of Reggina with a non-debatable 3-0 score (goals by Pazzini and a Gilardino double).

Obviously, the most anticipated match of the Serie A week-end was the Stadio Olimpico showdown between AS Roma and Inter Milan. And what a spectacle it was in Rome Sunday, a match with goals aplenty and very entertaining to watch… that is, unless you were a Roma fan. Inter walked all over their Giallorossi rivals, putting 4 goals past Doni (Ibrahimovic x2, Stankovic, Obinna) and taking first lead in the Serie A standings

Ronaldinho scored twice to help AC Milan beat 10-man Sampdoria 3-0 in the Serie A. Milan had a one-man advantage from the 55th minute after defender Stefano Lucchini received a second yellow card for handball inside the area. Ronaldinho converted the penalty and added another goal in the 66th on a give-and-go with Brazil teammate Kaká. Filippo Inzaghi scored his first goal of the season in the 90th.

Bologna, which had lost five straight games, stunned Lazio 3-1 with two goals from Marco Di Vaio. Bologna had scored three goals in the first six games this year, but collected three in 26 minutes against Lazio, the co-league leaders coming into the weekend games.

In the Sicilian derby, Catania defeated Palermo 2-0 to share second lead in the standings. Catania, Udinese and Napoli have 14 points, Lazio, Milan, Fiorentina, Atalanta have 13, while lone leaders Inter Milan dominate proceedings with 16.

In other matches, Genoa beat Siena 1-0 (goal by Giuseppe Biava), Cagliari went on to beat Torino thanks to a Robert Acquafresca goal in the 86th, while Lecce vs. Udinese and Chievo-Atalanta both ended in draws (2-2 and 1-1 respectively).

GOAL of the WEEKGOALS of the WEEK

Brilliant control and finish by Bologna’s Marco Di Vaio here (scroll to min. 00:45). Just eyeing the ball while making the run, controlling it on the go, and finishing it with your left (not Di Vaio’s foot) takes a great deal of skill. A pure striker’s goal.

Pretty neat free-kick by Volpi also in the video.

By the way from now on, instead of making a Top 5 list I’ve decided to give you the winner right away. Saves everyone the time of clicking through the text video links (which most of you don’t seem to do anyway).
