Serie A matchday 6 – Torino 0 Trezeguet 1

Serie AWell I gotta say: I’m ecstatic. As a Juve fan, I was waiting for the 222th Turin derby with a lot of excitement, but unfortunately the game was anything but. A boatload of missed passes, very few shots on goals, and a lot of ball possession going nowhere. However, in the 3rd minute of stoppage time David Trezeguet finally managed to get me out of my seat: pure goalpoaching from the Frenchman, and what a relief for the Bianconeri who are now 1 point behind leaders Inter in the standings!

Serie A matchday6 - Torino-Juve 0-1

The starting line-ups for this match had no surprises for us on Torino’s side but many on the side of Juventus. Claudio Ranieri decided to leave young Criscito on the bench for this one, and fielded Nicola Legrottaglie to pair up Giorgio Chiellini as centerback, whose movement from left to center freed up a spot for Cristian Molinaro on the wing. Also, Raffaele Palladino was preferred to Sergio Almiròn in midfield, meaning that Juve had effectively fielded a 4-4-2 formation with Del Piero-Trezeguet up front. Cristiano Zanetti tries to elude the Torino defenders’ close markingFor Torino, Paolo Zanetti was substituting injured Alessandro Rosina, and Álvaro Recoba was chosen to support the lone striker Nicola Ventola.

The first half ended 0-0. There, I said it right from the start (it would be pointless to write many paragraphs about it). The real winner of the first period were man-marking and high pressure, a specialty of the Torino team more than Juve’s in this game. The Granata players made their absolute priority to keep aggressiveness very high in midfield, in order to completely block down any offensive play of the ‘Old Lady’. As a result however, Torino didn’t try to produce many chances of their own either, and the main thing the Stadio Olimpico supporters saw today, were boring long balls for Ventola on one side, and for Trezeguet on the other. Alessandro Del Piero attempts to escape Hernan Dellafiore. The Juve captain was one of Ranieri’s best men today.Even Del Piero (who had some great plays during the match to create some space) wasn’t being lucky on free kicks.

In the 2nd half, it seemed as if both teams had woken up from their slumber (maybe splashing some water on the players’ faces at half-time did the trick) because we immediately had some scoring chances (finally!). A Recoba cross-shot was parried by Gigi Buffon with some difficulty (the Juve keeper also got on the ensuing rebound of Gianluca Comotto, even though the play was called offside), then a few minutes later a beautiful backheel flick by Del Piero for Trezeguet opened some space, but the Frenchman mistimed his first touch and the chance went begging.

Then, back to the slumber. The match continued through an intense physical battle (especially in midfield) with the ensuing inevitable yellow cards for either side. Alvaro Recoba creating some space to escape Pavel NedvedEventually, Cesare Natali and Cristiano Zanetti picked up a knock and had to come off (replaced by Matteo Rubin and Sergio Almiròn), both teams had a few other half-chances (and by saying ‘half’ I’m being generous), and it seemed like the game was doomed to end on a 0-0 scoreline (especially after Pavel Nedved exploited a perfect Del Piero pass for  a golden chance at the goal,  but sent the ball over the bar in the 86th).

However with 1 minute left on stoppage time, oh magic: a long ball was sent forward by Almirón, Trezeguet was a good 3-4 meters offside but the ball is intercepted by Hernan Dellafiore. Not so well though, because the Torino defender’s header went right to the Frenchman (now onside, because the pass was made from the opposition) in a perfect spot for a finish from the edge of the box! On the volley, bottom-right corner for Trezegol. 1-0 Juve, about frickin’ time!

Grandeeeeeeee Juveeeeeeeeee!!!     THAT’s exactly the reason why you should leave David Trezeguet on the whole match. Learn from that Mr.Ranieri (and his stupid Iaquinta substitution vs. Udinese)

      WOOOHHOOO!
