Gazzetta dello Sport

MILAN, 6 April 2008 – Inter “reply” to Roma (who came out ahead 3-2 against Genoa) defeating Atalanta 2-0 in Bergamo and increasing their lead to 4 points over the Giallorossi. Although Inter were without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Nerazzurri coach Roberto Mancini relied on a great match both from seasoned veterans like Patrick Vieira (whose goal on the 21 minute gave Inter the lead) and from younger prodigies like Mario Balotelli (age 17) who closed the match on the 29 minute.

Fiorentina distanced themselves from AC Milan in the race for fourth place, celebrating their 2-0 win against Reggina (second goal during the stoppage time). Fiorentina have again 4 points over Milan and Sampdoria, who thanks to their 2-0 win over Livorno, continue on a fantastic ascent in the standings. Antonio Cassano celebrated his return from suspension with a top-notch performance. As for Udinese, it was not a great day for the Bianconeri’s 4th-place race, the coveted guaranteed spot in the UEFA Champions League. Udinese drew in Siena and are now 5 points behind.

Important results this week for the two Serie A teams with new managers: Walter Zenga’s Catania toppled Napoli and Gigi Cagni’s return to Empoli was marked by a 1-0 win on Torino soil. Six teams are at the bottom of the board with 5 points: three of them will be in Serie B. Parma are one of those six teams in a delicate situation, after ending in a draw (2-2) at Lazio‘s Stadio Olimpico of Rome.

GOALS of the WEEK

Strictness, compared to last week, increases even more today as we offer you  our ‘Top 5′, and not a single goal more. ‘Quality over quantity’ as one would say, and ‘One, but one good one’ for the winner.

This week, the goal-of-the-week award goes to Mattia Cassani. As a Juve fan myself, I have a hard time admitting it, but Cassani’s execution coupled with the weight of the goal itself (coming so late in the game, at a time during which the Rosanero were dominated by their opponents), makes it a clear winner in my eyes. Not only that, but Cassani had never scored before in the Serie A! Not bad for a first, wouldn’t you say?
