Inter 2-1 Roma: Adriano & Zlatan Lead the Way to Coppa Italia Semis…

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Inter vs. Roma has sort of become like a Coppa Italia tradition in recent years. Since June 2005, these two teams have been contending the final of a competition which, at the cost of being snubbed by the big teams, has always served as the launching platform of many interesting youngsters and given rise to a variety of spectacular matches.

While it delivered on the former (keep an eye on Davide Santon —age 18, left full-back— in the coming years), despite a few “ooh” and “aah” moments Wednesday’s encounter probably won’t be remembered in the annals of the beautiful game. As was to be expected however, it was a tightly-contested affair between two bitter rivals, fighting to their dying breath until the very last minute of play. And as often been the case with the Nerazzurri this season, not without its moments of controversy.

L’Équipe: Equipe-type mondiale 2008

It’s that time of the year again. With the days fast approaching December 31, awards for the “Best XI” of 2008 are being handed left and right. The biggest one (at least as far as us Europeans are concerned) probably being UEFA’s Team of the Year (voting is still open on here).

While we wait for the UEFA popular vote (winners announced in January), let’s have a look at what the main sports newspaper in France has in store for us this year. Here’s L’Équipe‘s All-Star XI Football Players for 2008.

And once again, don’t be surprised if Premiership elements are leading the way and Serie A is snubbed…

Lazio 0-3 Inter: It’s Trampling-Time at Stadio Olimpico (Serie A Matchday 15)

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Row row row your boat,
Gently down the stream,
Inter Milan win again,
That seems to be theme

Don’t applaud all at once. I admit it, I used a rhyming dictionary, but it’s an awfully fitting song for the present circumstances, don’t you think? I mean the guys from Gazzetta put it very eloquently on Saturday: “If anyone knows of antidotes and countermeasures, he should get them out now, or at this rate the Serie A could be over by Christmas.”

There just seems to be no stopping the Nerazzurri armada lately. They play badly, they win. They miss a boaload of chances, they still win (usually in the 90th). And then there’s games like Saturday evening’s.

The 3-0 scoreline by which Inter demolished Lazio at the Olimpico was so commanding it was scary. Class and unmatched physical strength destroyed the Biancocelesti, who mere seconds after kick-off had already found themselves trailing on the scoreline. From that point onwards, the spectators in Rome assisted to some sort of black & blue-painted monologue, where the Diakité’s own goal and Ibrahimovic’s header were only the culmination of a match dominated from start to finish.

Golden Ball 2008 – C-Ron Gets B-D’or, Italy Gets Nothing

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Chalk up one more trophy for CR7, this one the biggest and most important one of them all.

In a decision that surprised no one given the player’s outstanding performances over the past year (both domestically and in Europe), French magazine France Football has handed its prestigious Ballon d’Or award to Cristiano Ronaldo.

C-Ron was a clear winner, collecting 77 first-place votes from the 96 journalists judging the award (asked to choose their top 5 candidates in order, awarding between 1 and 5 points to each). It must also be noted that Ronaldo was cited by all 96 journalists, collecting a total of 446 points which placed him very far ahead of his rivals. Barcelona hitman Lionel Messi (third last year) finished second this time around with 281 points, followed by Liverpool’s Fernando Torres on 179 to complete the podium.
