Before Sunday, one of the main reasons for Juventus to complain this season was their injury situation. After today’s match against Sampdoria Bianconeri fans can add another item to the list, one which is just another manifestation of that darned bad luck persecuting the team all year long.
That item is woodwork.
Yes, as of today even posts and crossbars are conspiring against Ranieri’s boys, which tried their darndest to obtain a vital three points but found an attentive Blucerchiati defense and some evil curse of dark magic to deny them that joy (for I can find no other explanation to justify the boatload of missed chances I witnessed at the Stadio Olimpico today). The 1-1 final result will satisfy Walter Mazzarri (who has now raked four consecutive matches with points), but certainly not Juve, who see Inter and their Scudetto chances slipping further away.

In two days where (once again) the spotlight was focalized on bad officiating, Serie A’s evening match Inter vs. Samdporia was the final cherry on a week-end gone wrong for Italian referees. Those who thought that Roberto Rosetti’s “Best Referee” award (bestowed by the IFFHS last month) was an indication for optimism, now have to come back to the sad reality of things: there is still plenty of improvement required. Sunday’s 8:30 game between Nerazzurri and Blucerchiati only served as further evidence of that fact, as exemplified by Adriano’s showcase of boxing skills on Gastaldello, and a suspicious Cordoba challenge on Pazzini, right inside the Inter penalty box.
As for the match itself, it was a very tight & battled affair. Inter prevailed, and it was a very welcome victory for Jose Mourinho (who even earned the first Serie A red card of his career) & friends, especially given the unrelenting pressure of Juventus in the standings and the team’s shaky pyschological state following last week’s 3-1 loss to Atalanta. As for Sampdoria, Mazzarri’s boys fought hard and can find themselves unlucky for a variety of episodes, among which the aforementioned non-penalty call and a beautiful shot by Dessena in the dying minutes (well saved by Julio Cesar). The status quo is maintained at the top of Serie A, with Inter conserving their +3 lead on rivals Juventus.

11 yellow cards and 58 fouls committed. Derbies can be a hard-fought affair, but one has to wonder after how many fouls a game stops being a soccer match and turns into a boxing competition.
The 99th edition of the Derby della Lanterna, opposing the two main teams from Liguria and one which had been eluding the Rossoblu for 7 years, went to Genoa on Sunday. It was set to be a battle between Diego Milito and Antonio Cassano, the two ex-Liga players and the real protagonists of their respective teams so far this season. Talentino put all his heart into it, but in the end El Principe prevailed.
In the fifth minute of the second half, Genoa took a free kick on the right side of the pitch, and centered the ball towards the penalty box. On the receiving end, Diego Milito sent the Genoa supporters into ecstasy, a fantastic header ending right into Castellazzi’s top corner. And while Genoa triumphed, Sampdoria can have many regrets on the two disallowed goals for their side (in particular Fornaroli’s).

After AC Milan on Matchday 3, Serie A made two out of three Wednesday by adding yet another name to the UEFA Cup playoffs Round. With only one day left in the Group Stage, only a certain club from Genoa has yet to join the Round of 32 party.
Indeed, Sampdoria must have had their minds elsewhere on Wednesday, because they were (quite unequivocally) beaten by Standard Liège with a whopping score of 3-0. Could the upcoming Derby della Lanterna against Genoa have something to do with it?. Meanwhile, Udinese secured their spot in the playoffs round thanks to a 2-1 win at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb, courtesy of goals by Fabio Quagliarella and Christian Obodo.

Good operation for Italy on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Cup Group Stage. Indeed, out of the three Serie A teams still left in the competition, all of AC Milan, Udinese, and Sampdoria were victorious, achieving wins over Heerenveen (3-1), Tottenham (2-0), and Partizan Belgrade (2-1) respectively.
Not only that, but Thursday night was special because it marked a very rare event in football history: Gennaro Gattuso scored a goal!
And, AND… made an assist! Grande Ringhio!
