Roma 1-1 Udinese: As the Olimpico Awaits Arsenal, Giallorossi Saved by Vucinic (Serie A Matchday 27)

After a week of steamy press release rants, counter-declarations, suspensions, and controversy (all stemming from last Sunday’s 3-3 affair), Roma could not do better than a 1-1 home draw to Udinese Saturday. A result not doing much good for either team, and which certainly doesn’t help the Giallorossi’s morale in light of their upcoming UCL match vs. Arsenal. With Daniele De Rossi suspended, Totti in iffy condition, and David Pizarro just joining the injury list, Luciano Spalletti will have some serious tactical thinking to do before Tuesday.

The upside for the Romans? Mirko Vucinic. The Montenegrin striker came on for Menez in the 58th and went on the scoreboard just 3 minutes later, tying the game for a valuable point. It’s the kind of scoring efficiency Roma will need against Arsenal, hoping that the stream of dubious refereeing decisions surrounding them will come to an end.

Napoli 0-3 Roma: Giallorossi Enjoying Neapolitan Hospitality (Serie A Matchday 20)

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Without a doubt one of the main stadiums that contributed (and continue to contribute) to Italian football’s great history is Stadio San Paolo, and without a doubt the hospitality it continues to show for AS Roma will make Spalletti & Co. glad to return here next year.

It just seems that Napoli‘s home form, as good as it might be (the Azzurri had raked up 18 consecutive home matches without a loss), can’t help but break its teeth when it’s dealing with the Giallorossi. Who have now increased their Napoli-Roma victories streak to three (four if you add 2005′s Coppa Italia) and this without conceding a single goal. Scary. And unproductive (for Napoli that is), because Reja’s team now find themselves level with Roma in the standings, and the prospects of Champions League football (howevery illusory they might have been) slowly slipping away.

The only catch (and excuse for Napoli)? Roma’s first goal by Philippe Mexès was blatantly offside.

Italy 2-1 Montenegro: Aquilani Double Gives Marcello Lippi 30-Game Unbeaten Streak (World Cup 2010 Qualifiers)

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Lippi isn’t the kind of guy concerned with critique or running after world records, and I’m sure most of us here would agree getting three points out of a match (such as Italy did today against Montenegro) is the most important thing. Yet, it must come as great satisfaction when someone tells you you’ve officially achieved 30 consecutive matches unbeaten at the Azzurri helm, which puts you right up there with a legend like Vittorio Pozzo (for those unfamiliar with pre-World War II history, he was the World Cup winning coach in 1934 and 1938).

As for today’s match, it was without question a Giallorossi’s affair. Starting with the shirt Montenegro was wearing (red & yellow), the home stadium (Lecce, which traditionally wears those colours), and above all Alberto Aquilani: the Roma midfielder had not played this well since the match vs. Real Madrid back in March, and highlighted his performance by two goals (including his first ever for the Azzurri). Sprinkle a little bit of Mirko Vucinic in between (yet another Roma player), and the picture is complete.

Italy vs. Montenegro Preview (World Cup 2010 Qualifiers)

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Perched at the top of Group 8 World Cup Qualifiers (7 points in 3 matches), Italy is looking towards Wednesday’s match vs. Montenegro as a good way to wrap up the year 2008. With no more WC qualifying matches till March, you can be certain Marcello Lippi’s boys will step onto Stadio Via del Mare (Lecce) eager to end the year on a win, especially after Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Bulgaria.

Can Vucinic & friends prevent them from doing so?
