Milan 1-2 Lazio: Pandev Wins It in Extra Time (Coppa Italia Round of 16)

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Chalk out another “big” one. At the end of 120 minutes of intense tactical battling Lazio knocked out AC Milan out of the Coppa Italia, courtesy of goals Mauro Zarate and Goran Pandev. Shevchenko’s opening tally was not enough for the Rossoneri, who exit the competition at the the Round of 16 stage.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are not going through a very happy phase at the moment. They have lost 4 points relative to Inter in the last two rounds of Serie A, and have now seen the first trophy of the season (albeit the least prestigious one) slip away from them. The Biancocelesti on the other hand deserved their win after a solid performance, and it looks as if Delio Rossi’s side brought back their good form from the month of September. They will face the winner of Fiorentina vs. Torino in the quarterfinals.

Palermo 3-1 Milan: Rosanero >>> Rossoneri at Stadio Barbera (Serie A Matchday 14)

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Carlo Ancelotti has a plan for December. His plan is to catch up to Inter before the Christmas break, so that his team can go on holiday with a good psychological advantage.

After the events on Sunday evening, it seems like Carlo should think of a “plan B”.

AC Milan got litterally trampled on Sunday, besieged and mocked by the best Palermo side of the season. Even though the goals were all scored in the second half, the Rosanero dominated all of the 90 minutes of play, eventually piercing through the (weak) Rossoneri defenses with Miccoli, Cavani and Simplício. Milan’s late reaction (Ronaldinho P.K.) was thoroughly insufficient as Ancelotti’s team repeated (and even amplified) all of the limits shown in the draws against Lecce and Torino.

Torino 2-2 Milan: Rossoneri “Hand” Granata a Draw… (Serie A Matchday 13)

Monday, November 24th, 2008

What is a handball? What is not a handball? How to define intention? These are just a few of the questions to be raised, once again, after a doubtful night of refereeing in the Serie A. Torino vs. Milan serves as a good example that even an experienced ref like Stefano Farina can sometimes reduce the difference between a good and a bad call to a very thin line.

Was Pratali’s handball on Ronaldinho’s cross a penalty? Was Kaladze’s handball unintentional? The two offenses were probably of equal entity, yet what could have been a nail-in-the-coffin in favor of the Rossoneri rapidly transformed into an equalizing spot-kick for the Granata. All in all, based on both team’s performances tonight, the 2-2 draw was not a scandalous result. Although Khaka Kaladze won’t quite see it the same way…

494 Player Salaries of Serie A – Kaká is the king

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Kakà is one rich lucky guyItalian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport published today the salary list of all the athletes involved in the Italian Serie A league. According to Gazzetta, the 2007-08 season saw a big increase of money expenditure for the transfer market: over 666 million Euros (devil’s number… a coincidence?) says the Italian newspaper. However, player salaries are very much on the rise as well, and total to about €368 million.

The title of King Midas goes to the 25-year old Brazilian midfielder Kaká, who earns €6.0m a year. Francesco Totti is a close 2nd (€5.5m), followed 3 Inter players (Patrick Vieira, Adriano, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, all with €5.0m). Cagliari was found to be the “least generous” club. Just think that with Totti’s salary, Cagliari could pay its entire team (€4.97m).
