Vin, playing in hot/cold conditions is something all athletes are used to. Playing against teams which physiologically possess a higher red blood cell (RBC) coun't isn't.

High altitude requires your body to work extra hard to make oxygen available to all the tissues (oxygen rarifies the higher you go up). People who are used to live under these hypobaric conditions naturally develop a higher blood cell count over time, to compensate for oxygen rarity (more blood cells = more oxygen delivered to body tissues).

When teams who are used to live/play at sea level travel to these countries however, they don't have sufficient time to "build up" their RBC level, which puts them at a very unfair disadvantage (something drastically worse than cold/warm acclimation differences you mentioned). Hence why an alternative solution should be found.

Hi Marco,
Home field advantage is a part of calcio, or any sport, for that matter. If they refused to let those countries host in stadiums over X,XXX feet, alt., then who's to say that stadiums in very cold, or very hot climates shouldn't be prevented from hosting as well?

I am glad that they decided to allow them to continue hosting. Anything else would be tremendously unfair, and would have far-reaching ramifications.

I agree Martha, that Evo Morales picture is very poignant and conveys perfectly the intentions of making a statement.

However on that particular issue, I have to agree with FIFA: high-altitude countries have an unfair advantage when their teams host games at 3,000 feet above sea level, a solution has to be found. I agree that it's not fair that Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia don't get to host home games, but having the other teams gasping for air isn't fair either.

That Morales picture is wonderful, the photographer must have known as he was taking it that he had something.

(And Hollis Thomas' head is always smoking, so that one's not THAT cool.)
