Heroes of the week
Once again this week, no goalscorers & no assist-men: how to fill our ‘heroes of the week’ segment? How about the Italian ‘derby’ between Abbiati (Atletico Madrid) and Zambrotta (Barcelona)? Sounds good right?
And good it was, for Abbiati in particular (not so much for Zambrotta). Los Rojiblancos had a tough one this week, facing off against 2nd-ranked FC Barcelona. However, we all know how the atmosphere at Vicente Calderón can get, and that surely gave them a big boost.
The biggest boost however was probably the one provided by Christian Abbiati and his saves vs. Eto’o and Iniesta. As for Gianluca Zambrotta, well… he managed to get a nice shot on target (saved by Abbiati), but overall (and much like the entire Barcelona backline) he suffered the energy and pace of Sergio ‘El Kun’ Agüero.
A small mention should also go to Fabio Cannavaro, protagonist of the week-end in a rather particular way. In the match vs. Recreativo de Huelva (featuring Stefano Sorrentino as well by the way) Real Madrid was held to a 1-1 tie when coach Schuster decided to give his offense a little boost: off came Cannavaro, on came Robinho. On the first ball touched by the Brazilian Los Merengues pulled ahead 2-1, and later in the game increased their lead to 3-1 (thanks to another goal by Robinho). The match ended 3-2 for Real Madrid, with Recreativo pulling one back in stoppage time. Talk about being decisive, huh Fabio?
