Heroes of the week

We’re back to goalscoring prowess in IPAtW, only this time it doesn’t take us to our usual destinations. In fact, why don’t we take this opportunity to explore the “less ordinary” leagues Europe has to offer.

Graziano Pellè, age 23You know, I’d really love to tell you the reason why AZ Alkmaar are doing so well in the Eredivisie at the moment, is our very own Graziano Pellè. I’d really love to. Of course that would be a lie, but I’d still love to. The truth is Graziano isn’t exactly a favorite of Luis Van Gaal’s: more often he ends up watching his team’s games from the bench than actually actively participating in them. This week however, full glory must be bestowed upon the ex-U21 striker, for his two goals vs. Groningen largely contributed to AZ’s consolidation as league leaders in the Dutch championship. Take that Van Gaal, and please give our Italian boy a little more action (uhm… that sounded… dirty, didn’t it).

Stefano Napoleoni, age 21From Holland we move on to Greece: remember our good buddy Stefano Napoleoni? Sure you do! He was actively trying to keep Widzew Łódź in the Polish top division, scoring left and right last year? Unfortunately despite Stefano’s goals Lodz couldn’t avoid the drop, so our buddy moved on to greener pastures to… Levadiakos (yeah, bit obscure I know, but hey… Widzew wasn’t exactly mainstream either). But more good news? Not only is Mr. Napoleoni playing… he’s scoring too, this week contributing to Levadiakos’s 3-0 victory over Iraklis.

Luigi Beghetto, age 35Lastly, we don’t get the chance to travel to Switzerland very often do we? Particularly, we’re going to Bellinzona today, capital of canton Ticino. There’s a whole bunch of Italians playing here, including one of Bruno Conti’s sons, Andrea (his other son Daniele plays for Cagliari in Serie A). We’re not talking about Andrea this week though, but midfielder Luigi Beghetto. This 36-year old forward (who counts a number of appearances in Serie A with Chievo & Treviso) scored in AC Bellinzona’s 2-0 win over Neuchatel Xamax Saturday, so yay for him!
